A record-breaking number of people watched the Melaleuca Freedom Celebration fireworks show at Snake River Landing Wednesday night. Officials estimate over 200,000 spectators witnessed the largest fireworks display west of the Mississippi River. Last year, Idaho Falls Police estimated 170,000 people viewed the 31-minute show along the banks of the Snake River.

The Melaleuca Freedom Celebration drew the largest crowd in the event’s 25 year history Tuesday night. Idaho Falls Police Chief Mark McBride said an estimated 170,000 people viewed the fireworks display. Around 110,000 watched from Snake River Landing, where more than 20,000 fireworks were shot off in 31 minutes.

Pyrotechnicians prepare fireworks for Melaleuca Freedom Celebration

More than 20,000 firework shells containing some 17,000 pounds of explosives will be shot into the air Tuesday night as part of the biggest Melaleuca Freedom Celebration in Idaho Falls history. Organizers and workers spent Monday at Snake River Landing preparing and setting up the fireworks that will be displayed during the 31-minute show.
